במרכז עלילתה עומדים שני נערים שמחפשים את אביהם, ותוך כדי כך גם נאבקים בכל מיני שדים, מפלצות, רוחות רפאים, ושאר יצורים חביבים שנוהגים בדרך כלל לפקוד בהמוניהם את יצירותיהם של סטיבן קינג ווס קרייבן. חיפוש הבנים אחר אביהם היא עלילת המעטפת של הסדרה, כשבכל פרק הם מגיעים למקומות עליהם קראו בעיתונים עקב תופעות משונות שקרו בהם, כדי לחפש שם את שאיבדו, ולהלחם ברוע שגרם לאותן תופעות. שתי דוגמאות לטיפוסים השטניים בהם נאלצים השניים להלחם הן: רוח רפאים נשית שרוצחת גברים שבגדו, ושד אינדיאני טורפני שמעלים בני אדם ביערות. חוץ מזה, הסדרה מלאה גם בסמלים מיסטיים כדוגמת הכוכב המחומש הידוע, ומתכתבת עם אמונות טפלות רווחות, דוגמת אגדת המפלצת מאגם לוך נס.
